Board of Directors

Philip B. Simon, CPA is the current Chairman of the Company’s Board of Directors. Mr. Simon is a partner of Howson & Simon LLP and the president of Lawrence Investments, LLC, one of Quark’s major investors. Mr. Simon serves on the boards of directors of several private companies affiliated with Lawrence Investments. Mr. Simon joined Lawrence Investments in 1997. Mr. Simon has worked for 25 years as a partner at Howson & Simon. Mr. Simon holds an A.B. from Yale University and a J.D. from Stanford Law School. He is a member of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Daniel Zurr, Ph.D. is the Company’s President, Chief Executive Officer and a current member of the Board of Directors. Dr. Zurr founded Quark in 1993. Prior to joining Quark, Dr. Zurr served as vice president for corporate business development for Israel Chemicals, Ltd. From 1980 to 1983, Dr. Zurr served as the director of licensing at G.D. Searle, a specialty pharmaceutical company. Dr. Zurr was the chief executive officer of Plantex-Ikapharm, a pharmaceutical company, from 1972 to 1980. Dr. Zurr obtained his M.Sc. at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and his Ph.D. from Imperial College, University of London.


Kazuyuki Matsui,  has over 22 years of professional experience in global financial markets. He started his career in April 1987 as equity trader and salesman at Taiheiyo Securities, a mid-size Japanese brokerage house. From 1989 to 1994 he worked for Schroders Securities, both in the head London office and in Tokyo, focusing on Japanese and European equity products, Japanese convertible bonds, warrants and Asian equities. In July 1994 Mr. Matsui joined Cigna International Investment Advisors, the investment management arm of Cigna Life Insurance Company, working as an equity fund manager, and in March 1997 was promoted to vice-president in charge of asset allocation for Asia. From March 1999 to October 1999 Mr. Matsui worked as vice-president of marketing and product planning at State Street Global Advisors (Japan), where he was involved in defined contribution (DC) pension-related projects. He then joined Morningstar Japan, a specialist mutual fund ranking company owned by SBI Holdings, as a DC professional in charge of SBI Group’s DC strategy. Mr. Matsui helped establish and served as chief operating officer of Softbank Asset Management – the investment management arm of SBI Group – until May 2002, when Softbank Asset Management merged with Aozora Asset Management, which was subsequently renamed SBI Asset Management. Since 2002 Mr. Matsui has served as president and chief executive officer of SBI Asset Management and as a director of SBI Holdings since June 2008.

Toru Mio is a founding partner of Asuka DBJ Partners Co., Ltd., a private equity investment company with approximately $240 million in assets under management, formed in 2005 as a joint venture between Asuka Asset Management Limited and Development Bank of Japan. Since 2005, Mr. Mio has served as a director and investment committee manager for Asuka and on the board of directors of two of it’s portfolio companies – ADF, Gordon Brothers Japan Co., Ltd. and ADS Global Partners Ltd. From 1988 to 2005 Mr. Mio held various management positions with Nikko Citigroup Limited, including head of the Mergers and Acquisitions group and co-head of the Consumer & Healthcare group, where he engaged in a wide range of investment banking activities, including international strategic advisory and corporate financing services and advised a number of notable transactions such as Nissan Motor Company’s strategic alliance with Renault in 1999, Japan Tobacco’s acquisition of the international tobacco business of RJR Nabisco in 1999 and the 2004 sale of Shaklee Corp. by Yamanouchi Pharmaceutical. Mr. Mio also presently serves as vice chairman of WR Hambrecht & Co. Japan, Inc. and as a director of So-net Entertainment Corporation. Mr. Mio holds an M.A. in International Relations from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, University of Tokyo, a B.A. in Latin American studies from the University of Tokyo and a degree in Anthropology from the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico and the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Yucatan.

Trent M. Gunter is currently the President of Chadbourn Securities, Inc., an investment banking firm and a registered broker/dealer. Since joining Chadbourn in 2003 Mr. Gunter has overseen the expansion of the firm from one office in Jacksonville, FL to three additional offices in New York City, Chicago, and Cupertino, CA. From 1998 to 2002, Mr. Gunter was a founding partner of Laird & Co. LLC, a merchant banking firm. At Laird Mr. Gunter was responsible for arranging institutional funding and strategic partnerships for The Mentum Corporation, Tradescape.com, and Escrow.com, among others.
From 1995 to 1998, Mr. Gunter was self-employed as a consultant with a specialization in sourcing foreign private capital for small-cap U.S. companies. From 1992 through 1994, Mr. Gunter was employed by Credit Lyonnais Securities (USA), Inc. where he was a Senior Vice President and Manager of the Intelligence Unit, providing global quantitative equity research to portfolio managers. From 1988 to 1992 Mr. Gunter was a Vice President at Daiwa Securities America, Inc, and was responsible for the sales and trading of Japanese equity derivatives. From 1985 to 1988 Mr. Gunter had sole responsibility in the United States for the sales and trading of Japanese equity warrants and convertible bonds at Morgan Stanley. Mr. Gunter’s career has included postings in London and Tokyo and in 2006 Mr. Gunter was selected as a Businessman of the Year by the Business Advisory Council of the National Republican Congressional Committee. Mr. Gunter holds a B.S. with dual majors in Finance and Management of Entrepreneurship from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and an M.B.A. in Finance from the Anderson School of Management at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

Philip M. Hahn served as Vice President and Assistant General Counsel at Pfizer, Inc. from 1978 to 2008. Mr. Hahn has extensive experience in structuring, negotiating and drafting major licenses and collaborations with U.S. pharmaceutical and biotech companies, as well as European and Japanese companies and broad experience in pharmaceutical and medical device businesses, including research, development, manufacturing and commercialization of products in U.S. and in foreign markets. Mr. Hahn is also knowledgeable in the areas of commercial, patent, anti-trust, bankruptcy, food and drug, and licensing law. Mr. Hahn is a member of the Bar of the City of New York (Member, Committee on Medicine and Law, Committee on Professional Responsibility, Patent Law Committee); New York State Bar Association; Lecturer, American Conference Institute and CLE programs of Association of Bar of City of New York; Member of New York Regional Board of Anti-Defamation League. Mr. Hahn holds an A.B. magna cum laude from Brown University, an L.L.B. from Yale Law School and is fluent in French.

Peter A. Thompson, M.D., FACP founded Trubion Pharmaceuticals, Inc., served as its president, chief executive officer and member of its board of directors since 2002 and led two rounds of venture capital funding before taking Trubion public in 2006. From 2003 to 2006, Dr. Thompson served as a venture partner at ATP Capital, a venture capital firm. From 1999 to 2000, Dr. Thompson served as chief executive officer and chairman of the board of directors of iMetrikus, Inc., a healthcare technology company, which he co-founded. Prior to iMetrikus, Dr. Thompson served as vice president and general manager of Chiron Informatics, and prior to Chiron, he served as vice president, research and technology development at Becton Dickinson Immunocytometry Systems. Dr. Thompson is a board certified medical oncologist and internist who received an M.D. and a Sc.B. from Brown University.
